LGBTQ rights survey

How do you feel when you hear the word gay, what imagery does it bring about?

Do you feel gay people should be denied the same rights as straights and why?

What harm would a gay couple being able to be married and raising children cause to this society?

Could there be a compromise, same rights different name would that be acceptable?

How were you taught about gay people?
Was there an influence as to how you think about gay people?

Do you believe homosexuality should be taught in school and if you do how it should be taught?  Just that it exists or would you go into detail on the dynamics of the relationships the same way heterosexual couples relationships are?

Do you believe lesbianism is seen as equal or in a different light as gay men?

Do you believe there is such a thing as bisexual people?

Can a person be homosexual and still be religious, why or why not?

Why is it more acceptable for women to be bisexual than men?

How would you react if a really good friend came out to you?

What if they were of the same gender?

What if your child came out to you?

How do you feel about other countries that execute people based on their sexuality?

Do you believe homosexuality is a choice?

Do you believe homosexuality can be cured?

How do you feel when you hear the word gay, what imagery does it bring about?
    – Like a prairie dog that just heard the flap of an eagle’s wing. “What? Where? Potential soul mate?”
    – Imagery: A unicorn wearing a bedazzled jean jacket prancing on top of a rainbow towards a cloud uncannily shaped like Cher’s head.

Do you feel gay people should be denied the same rights as straights and why?
    – As long as we are given the same rights as straights, we should be denied the same rights as well. Unless straights were denied the right to be fabulous and awesome; which in that case, no.

What harm would a gay couple being able to be married and raising children cause to this society?
    – The archetype of a heteronormative nuclear family will dwindle to nonexistence…OH NO!

Could there be a compromise, same rights different name would that be acceptable?
    – A compromise like this still ostracizes us and labels us as the other, so no.

How were you taught about gay people?
    – The internet and peers. I had to educate myself since gay people weren’t really in the media growing up.

Was there an influence as to how you think about gay people?
    – I’m gay and know gay people. And I know we’re not hedonistic monsters who are out to plague the world with disease and strife.

Do you believe homosexuality should be taught in school and if you do how it should be taught? Just that it exists or would you go into detail on the dynamics of the relationships the same way heterosexual couples relationships are?
    – I would first teach about LGBT history (Stonewall, Harvey Milk, the AIDS epidemic, RuPaul, etc). I feel like that’s a crucial part of understanding the issues that we face today and the change that needs to happen within our society. Also important is that sexuality and gender is fluid and not what exactly what society instills in us; therefore, we should keep an open mind to who people “choose” to love and what people “choose” to be. An open mind is important when considering all the other types of family dynamics out there in non-discriminatory way.

Do you believe lesbianism is seen as equal or in a different light as gay men?
    – It’s definitely more sexualized and seen as OK to close-minded straight people, as long as the lesbians are(1) hot and (2) wrestling in a mud pool in their bikinis.
Gay men? Nope, not having any of that.

Do you believe there is such a thing as bisexual people?
    – Sexuality is fluid. Yes.

Can a person be homosexual and still be religious, why or why not?
    – Why not? Who one loves should not obstruct their ability to experience faith.

Why is it more acceptable for women to be bisexual than men?
    – See above answer. Girl on girl action=OMG HOT MORE. Man on man action=FAGGOTS BURN HELL DIE.

How would you react if a really good friend came out to you?
    – I would be like “duh” because my gaydar is impeccable.

What if they were of the same gender?
    – I would be like “duh” because my gaydar is impeccable.

What if your child came out to you?
    – I would be like “duh” because my gaydar is impeccable.

How do you feel about other countries that execute people based on their sexuality?
    – It fills me with sadness and makes me wonder why such hostility towards something so innocuous exists.

Do you believe homosexuality is a choice?
    – If homosexuality were a choice, most people who are homosexuals wouldn’t be homosexuals. Why would one choose to be part of a group that is rejected, ostracized and devalued by most of society?

Do you believe homosexuality can be cured?
    – No.

How do you feel when you hear the word gay, what imagery does it bring about?

Depends on the context. Negatively, It brings up pain. Neutral and positive, I think of myself, and other people in my life.

Do you feel gay people should be denied the same rights as straights and why?

No, They deserve equal rights. They are human too.

What harm would a gay couple being able to be married and raising children cause to this society?

None that I can think of.

Could there be a compromise, same rights different name would that be acceptable?

No. That comes too close to the whole separate but equal arguments of the 20th century concerning civil rights.

How were you taught about gay people?
Was there an influence as to how you think about gay people?

I was not taught about them at all. In fact during puberty when I began to figure out my sexuality, I was not aware that there were other people who shared the same feelings. To me it was merely an unconsidered possibility for a relationship, but no connotations to it, positive or negative.

Do you believe homosexuality should be taught in school and if you do how it should be taught? Just that it exists or would you go into detail on the dynamics of the relationships the same way heterosexual couples relationships are?

In health class in high school, they never discussed anything about homosexuality. It was if it didnt exist. I was already out at that point, and reminded the teacher. She had to work as best she could with that reminder, and what the rules allowed at that time. but yes, It should be taught. For younger kids its as simple as: some people have boyfriends and some people have girlfriends. then in later years, more can be brought in. Possibly dynamics of a relationship, but I dont see much of a difference besides a removal of gender roles.

Do you believe lesbianism is seen as equal or in a different light as gay men?

I think that each group has its own stereotypes and are both treated differently. Both positive and negative on both sides, but in different ways.

Do you believe there is such a thing as bisexual people?

    Yes. See Kinsey scale.

Can a person be homosexual and still be religious, why or why not?

Yes. Religion and its texts can be interpreted differently by different people.

Why is it more acceptable for women to be bisexual than men?

Because straight men might get a threesome out of it, which they might benefit.

How would you react if a really good friend came out to you?

    “Takes one to know one!”

What if they were of the same gender?

    “Takes one to know one!”

What if your child came out to you?

    “Duh!”

How do you feel about other countries that execute people based on their sexuality?

That those countries need to think things over a bit better about their citizens engaging in consensual acts.

Do you believe homosexuality is a choice?

    No.

Do you believe homosexuality can be cured?

No. There is nothing to cure.
