Religious survey

Should religion be allowed to influence our government, should there be an actual separation of church and state?

If you practice any religion I would like to ask, what is the first thing you think when you hear that someone is either an atheist or agnostic?

How much does religion influence your life?

Can you make a decision without thinking of how your faith will view it?

Do you believe any one religion is superior to another, and if so why?

Why do so many people put blind faith into a deity that may not exist?

How do you feel about the faith leaders and how some have been caught in scandals, do you believe they should automatically be forgiven or held as an example as they should know better?

What do you think the chances are of us as a nation having a president who is not religious?

Why do we have in “god we trust” on our money?

Will we ever have a president who does not believe in religion?
Is a religion the same as a cult, If you think not why?

Why do you feel some people who practice religion feel the need to force it upon others?

Do you think religion is trying to suppress those who do not agree with their doctrines?

Why are there wars fought in the name of religion?

How would you describe the African American community trying to deny the rights of another minority (gays) because of religion?

Would you call it hypocrisy that the
Mormon Church helped pass a proposition that made marriage defined as between one man and one woman when in their doctrine it used to be ok for a man to have many wives?

People complain that we have taken religion out of public schools, is that not why we have Christian and Catholic schools?

Should politicians let their faith influence their work?

Do you think they give equal weight to everyone even those who do not practice faith?

Should the church be tax exempt?

Shouldn’t the bible or any other religious text be updated to fit with the modern times?

Why does religious programming have to dominate all of Sunday television?

Do you feel that Pagans or Wiccans would be given the same chance to have a show, or even Satanists for that matter?

Shouldn’t freedom of religion also mean freedom to not practice religion?

Should children be allowed to choose their own religion when they are old enough to make a choice?

Do you believe taking children to church is influencing how they decide which one to follow?

Should religion be allowed to influence our government, should there be an actual separation of church and state?

No. Theocracies have proven to be corrupt, and manipulative, and have one sect of a religion in power, influencing an entire people.

If you practice any religion I would like to ask, what is the first thing you think when you hear that someone is either an atheist or agnostic?

So am I. I am a practicing Pagan, but also atheist. I believe in no deities, but like to show respect to nature.

How much does religion influence your life?

I take the Solstices and Equinoxes very seriously. They are important to respect nature and celebrate the change in seasons.

Can you make a decision without thinking of how your faith will view it?

    Yes,

Do you believe any one religion is superior to another, and if so why?

No. Many religions share ideas or concepts, but with perhaps different words for a concept. Many of the modern day religions have borrowed/stolen parts from other religions.

Why do so many people put blind faith into a deity that may not exist?

Fear, not thinking about it, not knowing of other possibilities, or not wanting to know of other possibilities.

How do you feel about the faith leaders and how some have been caught in scandals, do you believe they should automatically be forgiven or held as an example as they should know better?

I think that it should remind the followers that their “leader” is also human, and not to follow them blindly. Forgive, Perhaps. But mostly that nobody is better than anybody else.

What do you think the chances are of us as a nation having a president who is not religious?

I think we have already had one, but have not disclosed this due to losing votes.

Why do we have in “god we trust” on our money?

It was added in 1956 onto money in response to the red scare. America didn’t want to associate themselves with the “godless” communists.

Will we ever have a president who does not believe in religion?

We probably already do/have. But hopefully we will have one that can be “out of the atheist closet” as it were.

Is a religion the same as a cult, If you think not why?

Yes. A religion just has more followers.

Why do you feel some people who practice religion feel the need to force it upon others?

Because the possibility that they might not be right might not occur, or terrifies them. They try to force their religion as proof that they are right.

Do you think religion is trying to suppress those who do not agree with their doctrines?

Depends on the religion, but some do.

Why are there wars fought in the name of religion?

Pride. Other peoples (religious leaders) ulterior motives for power/money/land/etc.

How would you describe the African American community trying to deny the rights of another minority (gays) because of religion?

Similar (but not directly the same) as the civil rights movement.

Would you call it hypocrisy that the Mormon Church helped pass a proposition that made marriage defined as between one man and one woman when in their doctrine it used to be ok for a man to have many wives?

Yes. Christianity (Mormonism aside) does state that Polygamy in the form of one man and many wives (see Jacob having 2 wives) is acceptable. While same sex marriage is not mentioned, it is hypocrisy that they changed their definition of marriage (mostly due to wanting to enter the Union of the US), but wont allow it to be changed again. Very similar to how the Church of England was founded when Henry the VIII wanted a divorce and the Roman Catholic Church would not grant it, and so he created the CoE to redefine marriage; now the CoE is complaining about redefining marriage to include same sex couples.

People complain that we have taken religion out of public schools, is that not why we have Christian and Catholic schools?

If the school is funded by the government then they should not be allowed to endorse/allow religion in a public school, beyond teaching about the religion in an academic sense.

Should politicians let their faith influence their work?

They might let their faith guide their view of morality, but they should also remember to separate this when it contradicts the constitutional view of separation of church and state.

Do you think they give equal weight to everyone even those who do not practice faith?

Depends on the politician, and depends on the issue.

Should the church be tax exempt?

No. However they may be given write offs for doing charitable works (with some restrictions on only if their works do not exclude various groups. For example the Salvation Army discriminates against LGBTQ people. By doing this it would disqualify the write off).

Shouldn’t the bible or any other religious text be updated to fit with the modern times?

Yes. They should be updated, but its followers and not its leaders should be allowed to either vote, or make suggestions on the parts to update.

Why does religious programming have to dominate all of Sunday television?

Money is a factor, but also the majority of the population of the US identifies as some sect of Christianity.

Do you feel that Pagans or Wiccans would be given the same chance to have a show, or even Satanists for that matter?

Would? At present no. Your lucky to see a Pagan (Wicca is a subset of Paganism) or Satanist ever interviewed on a religious talk show. Should they? I dont see why not. For Paganism, on the major holidays of the wheel of the year, would probably be best. I am not familiar enough with Satanism’s holidays to say what would be a good day to feature on TV.

Shouldn’t freedom of religion also mean freedom to not practice religion?

Yes. Nobody should be able to force people to practice or not practice a religion.

Should children be allowed to choose their own religion when they are old enough to make a choice?

They should yes. However many religions have induction ceremonies for children before they are able to choose. While that is not always bad, there should be a set age in each religion (all the same age mind you) where the child is taught about other religions and the option of no religion, and is then allowed (without pressure, or time limit) to choose what suits them best.

Do you believe taking children to church is influencing how they decide which one to follow?

Yes. Unless you take them to other religious events, and explain that there are many different regions, but they can chose to follow one if they want.
